Country song cover me up lyrics9/18/2023 It’s another to watch him and Shires lock eyes shortly after he finishes his phrase and she elevates that euphoria with the might of her own voice and strings. It’s one thing to hear Isbell sing about how “home was a dream / one that I’d never seen / ‘til you came along” and pray that you’ll find a love that terrifyingly transformative yourself. Isbell always plays “Cover Me Up,” even if Shires isn’t present, but to see the two of them play it together is to watch a man waltz with his muse live and in the flesh. Dont miss a chance to see this killer band ! Never lets me down ! One minute i’m dancin and the next, cryin in my beer ! But i left w a big smile on my face and warmth in my heart ! #leicaMĪ photo posted by Danny Clinch on at 12:46pm PSTĪs such, the context of “Cover Me Up” has changed, for this tour especially. The Amazing Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at the beacon theater last night. While “Flying Over Water,” “Elephant,” and other selections from Southeastern go over brilliantly with Isbell fans, “Cover Me Up” is what brings the house down - and its current form serves as a reminder that a great love only deepens with age. He, Shires, and the 400 Unit, Isbell’s band, have been touring in support of Something More Than Free following the Grammy win, and the setlist of their current show is split between its track list and the rest of his catalog. Isbell may need another shelf for his statuette collection soon, as Southeastern’s follow-up, the remarkable Something More Than Free, netted him two golden gramophones at the 2016 Grammys, one for Americana Album of the Year and one for American Roots Song of the Year with “24 Frames.” It earned the distinction of Song of the Year, and Isbell took home the additional honors of Album of the Year and Artist of the Year after he and Shires performed the ballad for a rapt crowd at the Ryman. It came as no surprise when “Cover Me Up” was recognized at the 2014 Americana Music Association Awards for its ascent to modern classic status. (The “ I sobered up / and swore off that stuff” line in the song doesn’t fall on deaf ears, either.) As such, it stuns with its clarity and ability to cut to the core of his sentiment in a chorus or less, and “Cover Me Up” is the beacon of this. Southeastern is Isbell’s “sober” record, the one he wrote following a stay in rehab after years of hard-partying took their toll on the musician’s personal life (and professional one, too). The song he was talking about, “Cover Me Up,” was a bold choice for Southeastern’s lead-off track: Solemn, stripped-down, and slow, it floors listeners with its stark vulnerability and the strength of its romance as Isbell unfolds his love for Amanda Shires, the fiddle player he married just days after he finished recording the album earlier that year. Jason Isbell told this to NPR Music in 2013, shortly before the release of Southeastern, the record that marked the beginning of a new era for the Alabaman troubadour and his tenure as this decade’s best American songwriter. “It’s not easy to sit down and open yourself up and say, ‘This is how much I love you,’ you know? It’s scary to do that.”

Writer, Publisher, Scientist, Statesman, Co-author of the Declaration of Independence and Fire Chief, he was a man of a great many talents. Templar Knights being burned at the stake by King Philip IV of France, 1310 c.e.ĭespite the similarity of shape, we could dismiss the Templar Cross out of hand if it were not for one very tenuous connection to the Fire Service: The Father of the American Fire Serviceīenjamin Franklin is generally acknowledged as the founder of the first true fire department in what would become the United States. Apparently firewood was easier to procure than gold. Phillip IV owed them a significant amount of money, and, being a King, when he did not want to pay his debt, he simply set them alight. Unfortunately, there is no actual historical connection to the Fire Service, excepting of course, that their leaders were burned at the stake by the King of France in the 14th century. While the Maltese Knights eventually became the Land Barons of Europe, the Templars became its first bankers. Note the non-bifurcated arms on the cross.Īlas, the Templar Knights share a common history with the Hospitallers, though their martial recognition was slightly earlier than the Order of St. With their portrayal in modern books and movies as mystical heros, there is a certain attraction to using their symbols as a basis for our own. If you like you myths knightley, The Firefighter’s Cross, or Cross pattée, is far more similar to the Templar Cross than to the Maltese. Even the earliest forms of the Firefighter’s Cross do not reflect this shape. The four arrowhead shape has remained to this day. Of course, one of the many problems with the Maltese Cross myth is the shape of the cross itself. In fact, they were much more likely to have used fire, delivered by flaming arrow, siege engine or fire ship, as a weapon than otherwise. No where in the historical record, in the scholarly works of historians, nor the tradition of the order itself exists any trace of an association with firefighting. From security guards, they now became mercenaries, albeit somewhat religious ones, and continued in that enterprize until the time of Napoleon. Kingdom of Amalfi coinage from the time of the founding of the Knights Hospitallers with the arrowhead cross symbolĭu Puy’s militia was later hired out to the newly formed Kingdom of Jerusalem in return for lands and income. The Amalfi standard was four arrowheads arranged with their tips touching to form a cross-like symbol. This militia took on the Standard of their financial sponsors, the merchant kingdom of Amalfi, Italy, who provided their early funding, simply adding it to their traditional black robes. Du Puy organized a militia of unattached secular knights 1 and common soldiers in about 1120 C.E. Under their second grand master, Raymond du Puy, their role expanded to providing security to their guests travelling between their hostels. While they retained their black robes, they now had official status as a separate order. John was formed by Papal orders in 1113 C.E., separating them from the original Benedictine monks. Rather than Johnny and Roy rushing you off to Rampart Emergency, The original role of the Knights Hospitaller was the equivalent of a security guard at a cheap hotel. What they offered was a bed, water, food and prayer. What the forerunners of the hospitallers (who were black robed Benedictine monks) ran was inexpensive inn, a place to rest for travellers on their way to Jerusalem. The word, which derives from the latin for hospitality, actually meant what we would call a hostel now, or maybe a medieval cheap motel. The Real Knights HospitallerĪ significant part of the myth is based on a mistranslation and misunderstanding of what a “Hospital” or more properly “Hospice” was during the time of the crusades. The real story is both more interesting and more “American”. It has been embellished endlessly, changing over time, as has the symbol itself. No one knows who invented this story, but it was created from whole cloth. The problem, of course, it that this is all just a fable, and not even a very good one. Somehow that then transformed into the Firefighter’s Cross we identify with today. They then became the noble Knights of Malta after the crusades, then the Order of St John, the ambulance service of England. They would have gotten the girl too… but alas, they were monks. The Maltese Cross became the fire service symbol by way of the Knights Hospitaller, who, in true Disneyesque fashion, battled flames with their own smouldering robes, honorably fought off hordes of Barbarian Arabs with only their swords, expertly treated burned comrades, all while helping little old ladies across the street. It appears on fire service websites all over the the U.S. Rita skeeter book on dumbledore9/18/2023 Read again his words to the young Gellert Grindelwald: In the early years of Dumbledore's life, he used similar reasoning to justify his desire to seize control of Muggles. For instance, a governmental body may decide that it is in the best interests of the nation to go to war, to sacrifice the lives of soldiers and sometimes even civilians in enemy states, to maintain the safety and freedom of its citizens. This same branch of ethical reasoning is often used to justify actions in wartime. The example most often used to illustrate this is the over-crowded life raft: in order to keep the raft afloat, and keep everyone else on board alive, someone has to jump (or be pushed) into the shark-infested waters. First elaborated in detail by Jeremy Bentham in 1781, the principle of Utility is as follows: "Of the course of action available, choose the one that produces the greatest aggregate well being." 4 More simply put, the greatest good for the greatest number. Utilitarianism has existed as an ethical theory for well over two hundred years. His goal was not to raise Harry for slaughter, but to raise him for sacrifice. Dumbledore had a highly-evolved plan based on sound ethical theories and, specifically, Utilitarian moral rules. His actions regarding Harry are neither immoral nor unethical. Good news, readers! You can still love Albus Dumbledore. She goes on to describe Dumbledore and Harry's relationship as "unhealthy, even sinister." 2 Later in Deathly Hallows, Severus Snape accuses Dumbledore of raising Harry as "a pig for slaughter." 3 Where is the kind, generous, brave Hogwarts Headmaster that we have grown so attached to? How could he treat Harry in a way that seems so ¦ immoral? Let's just say that nobody hearing him rage against You-Know-Who would have dreamed that he dabbled in the Dark Arts himself in his youth! And for a wizard who spent his later years pleading for tolerance, he wasn't exactly broad-minded when he was younger! Yes, Albus Dumbledore had an extremely murky past, not to mention that very fishy family, which he worked so hard to keep hushed up. Rita says in her interview with Betty Braithwaite of the Daily Prophet: Rita Skeeter's book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, is so scathing that no one who reads it can come away still pledging their unquestioned loyalty to Albus Dumbledore. Many readers feel that the Dumbledore exposed to Harry, via the Pensieve and in Rita Skeeter's expose in Deathly Hallows reveals a depressingly reckless, unethical, arrogant and self-serving person. By the time we read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry is devastated at the loss of Dumbledore, disgusted at Dumbledore's apparent lack of trust in him, and confused about Dumbledore's association with the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. But Harry's confidence in Dumbledore begins to falter in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when, after the return to power of Lord Voldemort, Harry senses that Dumbledore is not only avoiding him but withholding vital information regarding Harry's role in the downfall of Voldemort. He quickly becomes Harry Potter's mentor, confidant, and defender. As we get to know him throughout the earlier books, Dumbledore comes across as kind, gentle, wise, and ever-twinkling. When we are first introduced to Albus early in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he seems to be the stereotypical wizened old wizard with his pointed hat, crooked nose, long beard and flowing robes. Rowling's epic Harry Potter series has come to a conclusion, readers' minds are still reeling, trying to categorize the character of Albus Dumbledore. How Albus Dumbledore Combines Utilitarianism and CompassionĮven though J.K. Scott joplin peacherine rag9/17/2023 This was very unusual at this time, more so since Joplin was a black composer working with a white publisher. In any event, Stark, who had acquired some publications from another source and was considering putting out some of his own, was impressed enough by Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag that he quickly took it on, giving the composer a royalty (.01¢ per copy). How Joplin actually presented the piece to Stark has also become a point of legend. The club was run by Walker and Will Williams, and located on the second floor of 121 East Main, just over a block east of the primary downtown route, Ohio Street. It was while working in one of the many drinking and gathering establishments in Sedalia in the summer of 1899, the short-lived (December 1898 to January 1900) Maple Leaf Club, that Scott allegedly became involved with one of his greatest champions, music store owner John Stark, and at the very least where he found the name for his first truly inspired rag. Scott's next move towards greatness was back in Sedalia. There have also been stories that Joplin submitted another fine rag to Daniels but that it was rejected as too difficult, but again such stories are hard to confirm, even if they are plausible. There is no clear evidence, based on Daniel's work or his later recollections, that Charles arranged anything more than to have it published. Daniels, who received an "arranged by" credit on the cover. It was endorsed by Hoffman's young staff composer and whiz kid Charles N. He had submitted a work to Kansas City, Missouri publisher Carl Hoffman. Scott's first piano rag publication came in early 1899. Whether the piece was perhaps commissioned by the publisher or was just opportunism is unknown. While it has few descriptive titles in it, there is detailed text denoting the passage with the fatal wreck of the trains speeding towards each other at 60 miles per hour. Joplin's march was published soon afterwards in Temple, Texas. With around 40,000 spectators in attendance to watch the spectacle, it was inevitable that at least two would be killed by the boiler explosion following the crash. That afternoon did not go quite as planned. In reality, it was composed to commemorate a wreck staged by agent William George Crush of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) railroad line in Texas on September 15, 1896. Paull, who was already gaining fame for his Chariot Race or Ben Hur March, Joplin's The Great Crush Collision was intended to emulate a leisurely afternoon journey ending in a horrific train wreck. A descriptive piece in a style that would soon be the domain of composer E.T. His first instrumental works included two typical waltzes of the period, and one ambitious march. Coast rider at knotts berry farm9/17/2023 I hope it remains a staple at the park for many years to come.Įven before my visit to Knott’s Berry Farm, I felt a connection to Silver Bullet. Knott’s seems to be taking good care of this gem. Lastly, you can’t beat the lap bar-only restraints. Like other shuttle coasters, the brief moments of floater air on both of the spikes were highlights. It’s forceful but a great stepping stone for coaster enthusiasts who are working their way toward Xcelerator. One of three launched coasters at Knott’s Berry Farm, Montezooma’s Revenge is smack dab in the middle of the launch intensity spectrum of Pony Express to Xcelerator. The increasingly rare Schwarzkopf shuttle loop model is nestled within the Fiesta Village section of the park. Montezooma’s Revenge is the oldest coaster at Knott’s Berry Farm, but don’t let its age fool you. Jaguar! gets extra points for a relatively well themed queue and station. Our train was timed nearly perfectly so that we passed through the loop as a Montezooma’s Revenge train flipped overhead. My favorite part of Jaguar! was the track “threading” Montezooma’s Revenge’s loop (see below for a photo). It was rough in spots, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The stretched-out train is limited in the maneuvers it can make. The long, 15-car train meanders through the 2,600+ feet of track with this ominous roar that I wasn’t expecting from such a small(ish) coaster.įor those who don’t like steep drops or sudden turns, this coaster is for you. It was my first Zierer “Tivoli” coaster model. One of the older coasters at the park, it weaves through the Fiesta Village area of the park. Jaguar! (I can’t help but scream the name in my head when I see the “!”) is another family-friendly coaster at Knott’s Berry Farm. Had the line not been so long, I definitely would have ridden Pony Express a second (or third) time. The themed trains and the tunnel at the end of the coaster were nice touches. The seating position significantly enhancesd what would be a rather vanilla figure-eight layout with a relatively gentle (compared to Xcelerator) 0-38 mph launch. All seven of the Knott’s coasters that I rode offered something unique.įor instance, the family-friendly Pony Express was my first motorbike-style coaster. Pony ExpressĮarning the last spot on this list is nothing to be ashamed of. Note: unfortunately, due to heavy crowds, I wasn’t able to ride Coaster Rider, Sierra Sidewinder or Timberline Twister. So after much internal deliberation, this is my personal ranking of Knott’s Berry Farm’s roller coasters. But ranking them was more difficult than I expected. On paper, Knott’s Berry Farm’s coaster roster isn’t groundbreaking. While I was aware of the park’s diverse coaster offerings, several of them exceeded my expectations. I recently visited Knott’s Berry Farm for the first time as part of a Southern California theme park marathon.
